My class is a first grade class in the most economically depressed part of our school district. Our school district is located in a rural part of Texas. At our school, over 77% of our students are identified as being economically disadvantaged. In my classroom, it is also important to note that 1/3 of the students are repeating first grade, due to their inability to master skills while attending other schools. This great number of students is in-part due to our school having over a 25% mobility rate. It is imperative for me to close the learning gaps for these students so that they will be successful during the rest of their educational careers.
