My students are sweet, hard-working kids who for one reason or another need special education services to learn things that seem easy to other students. Due to COVID, my fourth graders missed being in school for large portions of the first and second grades, while my fifth graders missed out on second and third grades. It's in the early years, that students gain skills on which to build for reading, writing, and math. If a student has a disability, it is more difficult for them to learn at the same speed as their peers. Add in months to years without in-school instruction, and they are likely to have gaps in their learning that make it difficult to move forward. Hands-on materials like abacuses and things like light covers to reduce glare, when combined with chair bands or other fidget items, help students to overcome obstacles and learn. Thank you for anything you can do to help my wonderful kiddos.
