My energetic second-graders are curious new readers; some are eagerly sounding out new words, while others are still "cracking the reading code" and need more motivation. They love books that have humor, beautiful illustrations, and both familiar and new subject matter. Our class library is well stocked with animal books (one of the favorite subjects), science, and picture-book "classics," but needs culturally relevant fiction and social-studies literature in which kids can "see themselves" reflected through plot, language, and characters. Some of my students have books at home, or go to the public library, but some do not. There are parents whose first language is Spanish with limited English, so bilingual books can be very helpful for home reading. One-third of my students are English learners. Our California public school is a Title 1 (high-poverty) school in a Title 1 district, with over 70% free and reduced lunch.
