For years I have allowed my students to bring yoga balls to sit on if they feel they help them concentrate. I love how they help students work on posture, get rid of excess energy, and allow their nervous systems to function better. When I met my students for this coming year, they were excited that they too might be able to use yoga balls. They loved that they might not have to sit in a chair all day but would instead be able to wiggle and move. But this year I decided to do something a little different... Kids want to move their bodies. They learn best by interacting with the world and asking them to sit still on hard chairs makes school even harder for some students. I asked my class to think over other ways they might like to sit throughout the day, and they came up with so many ideas! Some people want to stand; some want lay down on their bellies; some want to kneel or bounce or lean. They had great suggestions, but what they especially wanted was choice. They want to take ownership over their learning and be free to move as they need. Wobble chairs and yoga balls will allow students to work on their core strength and balance while they are learning. These chairs are especially helpful for students with ADHD as deep muscle work can help the brain focus. Stacking stools will encourage healthy posture for students who don't want to wiggle. I have desks and community tables in my classroom, so these seating options will be easy to move from spot to spot as students work collaboratively and independently. These flexible options will give every child what he or she needs to be successful.
