I teach 8th Grade English at a charter school, after teaching HS English in public schools for over 10 years. 8th Graders are at a pivotal point ... between being a child and becoming a young adult who will choose a path in HS, and then in the adult world. I choose timeless classics which encourage them to think for themselves, and not just accept what they're told ... but question, think, and arrive at their own conclusions. Then they write based on evidence ... their position must be based on evidence, otherwise it's just their opinion. All of this is, of course, based on the Standards for critical thinking, analysis, reading classics & non-fiction, and evidence-based writing ... but I try to reach beyond the standards to make their learning meaningful to them as soon-to-be contributing members of society.
