At our school, we work every day to show respect, make good decisions, and solve problems. In order to do all of these things, some of my students rely on the support of the community for basic necessities. Some of them are dealing with housing and food insecurity. They cannot do their best if they are worried about being hungry, properly dressed, clean, and warm. In our school, we have a space I call Maslow's Closet that contains supplies to care for those concerns. This space is available to any student or family who is in need. I consider this to be a respectful way to begin solving the problems which exist in our inherently inequitable system. Every day we roll shelves by our front door with a selection of items from Maslow's Closet. Community members are encouraged to take what they need. Deodorant is one of our most popular items! At the moment, we have very little to offer to the our learning community.
