I switched districts and became the teacher of this 5th grade class halfway through the year. As a fun activity, I began reading Harry Potter to them to share a book that I loved at their age. Immediately, they all became engrossed. A class that previously wasn't excited to read, suddenly became eager to listen to this book every day. They even beg me to keep going when I stop! I would like to order a class set of the first Harry Potter book so that we can continue to read the book as a class. Rather than just me reading to them, the students will be able to read the books to each other. I plan to create groups where they can complete activities and discuss the book. I also would like to allow them each to take their book home and read portions of it to return and discuss. Lastly, the students are eager to finish the book and watch the movie together so that they can spot all of the differences. I hope that this will teach them that they can get much more from a book than from a film and encourage them to continue reading. Lastly, I also am requesting Dog Man and Diary of A Wimpy Kid box sets for our class library. These are the books that disappear the most during silent reading time as the kids love to read them. While I recognize that they may be slightly below a 5th grade level, I appreciate that they get the kids excited about reading and would like to foster that in the classroom.
