My elementary school English learners gravitate toward activities involving group work and creation. For example, they love working on puzzles. During playtime, my students engage in English in new ways, whether it's learning new vocabulary from peers or learning to give directions or state opinions. My students' language proficiencies will grow through authentic STEM experiences in my classroom. Magna-tiles and LEGOs would provide them with hands-on tools for learning new patterns of language. In addition--and equally important--these resources would serve as a foundation for some students' physical (fine motor) development. Indeed, some of my students tell me they have never played with LEGOs or similar toys. These products would offer endless opportunities for learning and language development!
