If my students had access to more books and they could freely read without having to wait in line for weeks on a book or share it with three of their classmates I believe their test scores would increase and they would develop an even greater love for reading than they already have. It would also give them a very solid foundation to build the rest of their education. Reading in second grade is absolutely critical. My students need to read their assigned lessons but they also need to learn to read for enjoyment and they are constantly asking for books. It hurts me to know that I’m not able to provide this for them and I know it’s holding back their education. If I’m awarded this money for these books, we will set aside time every afternoon specifically for pleasure reading.
