3rd and 4th graders have spontaneously started coming to the Wellness Room to play chess in the morning. They benefit enormously from practicing turn taking, conflict resolution, planning, and perspective taking. The children are making do with our few mismatched boards, but more chess sets and a cooperative game would be amazing for them! These games would help all our students, but especially students who need more support developing social skills or who prefer predictable, scripted, interactions. As an autistic person, some of my happiest times with friends were across a board.
