In the words of Augusto Boal, “we must all do theatre to find out who we are, and to discover who we will become." Many of my students think of theatre as something for rich, white people. Most have never seen a live show, read a play, listened to a musical or experienced the energy of performance. By expanding our capabilities, we expand our accessibility. Five hundred and forty of our seven hundred and sixty-five students are Hispanic, and fifty-five are Native American. According to UCLA Newsroom, “although minorities overall are becoming better represented in the entertainment industry. That progress largely hasn’t touched Latino actors, writers, directors and executives. Taos High School can help push that door open, expand students’ ideas about what is possible, offer a place for them to tell their stories and build skills that will connect students to the professional community.
