Learning about art and developing artmaking skills with the help of a well-functioning document camera increases learning, performance, confidence, and creativity! I will explain the most important ways I would use one in my classroom. A document camera would allow me to give better support to all levels of creatives and learners. A significant number of my students are English Language Learners and absorb information better visually rather than verbally. A document camera would allow me to teach with visuals by taking pictures and creating videos for my lessons. Students can then access these lessons using their Chromebooks and work at their own pace while translating the information to the language they prefer which helps them be and feel successful. This builds student creativity and confidence in artmaking and increases classroom participation. Students that are more advanced in artmaking skills can also move forward at their own pace and with enjoyment. I teach large groups of students at one time (up to 40 per class) and as I do in-class demonstrations, a well-functioning document camera would allow me to enlarge and project my demonstration for all students to see. It would also project the image with better lighting. I could use the feature of zooming in and out to help focus student attention on important information, and It would also correctly display colors, textures, and values. My current document camera displays color incorrectly, has no zoom feature, and images are projected with dim lighting. As a result, students get confused and it's hard for them to see details. One example is when we paint color wheels together. Students get confused in mixing a yellow-green when my mixture looks like a warm, dirty yellow. Confusion hinders their confidence, creativity, and performance.
