Genesis of Project In 2019, the founder of the Dunbar Black Studies Academy requested an interactive demonstration of scuba skills for her students. This introduction to the world of scuba was performed by two Black scuba divers, who presented slides and lectured on the significance of blacks in scuba careers. They also conducted an in-pool demonstration for 8 students who performed scuba swimming in full air-tanks and gear. It was the success of this introduction to scuba that encouraged all parties to pursue an ongoing program for certifying Black students. Description of Project Our high school diving club is an after school program that will teach students the skills needed to become certified Open Water SCUBA divers. At the end of the 6-8 week program, students who have completed the requirements of the program will receive a PADI issued Open Water Certificate. Training will include classroom conversations and presentations with Black professionals from various fields who use SCUBA on a regular basis, SCUBA safety instruction, quizzes, and in-pool training. The program will be made up of * Online or in-person classroom sessions (club vote) * In-pool sessions * At the end of the session students will be required to perform skills learned in the pool in an open water environment. This will either be at an area quarry that is used for this purpose, or through a school sponsored trip to the ocean. * 2 school-wide presentations for students in the 5 Academies at our school: Engineering Academy, Law and Public Policy Academy, Black Studies Academy, Sports Management Academy and Computer and IT Academy. This will serve as a Work Based Learning Opportunity for each academy. We need basic scuba equipment so our students can participate in this program.
