Creating a classroom environment that emphasizes student-based learning has always been a goal of mine. Within that environment, I try to allow students to make as many choices themselves as possible. With independent reading, I have noticed that many students struggle because they view themselves as a person who dislikes reading. Through my classroom library, I try to include a wide variety of novels to allow students to feel like they have a choice in what they read. I have closely observed which book titles I see students reading the most and which I hear them talk about the most, and to the best of my ability, I have picked titles that I feel will interest them the most. My main goal is to show students that everyone can enjoy reading, they just need to find the book that speaks to them. Once they find that book, it will encourage them to read more, and with reading more, they will become stronger readers. The most amazing feeling is when I see a struggling reader find a book that they can lose themselves in. With the bookcase and all these new books, I will be able to have a class library with the variety to allow me to reach a wider demographic of student readers. Students will have a better opportunity to find those books that will help them grow as independent readers. These books will also allow me to have a wider variety of options for my ELL students who don't often get to have much of a choice in what books they have access to in their native language. I have carefully selected book titles with my students in mind so that no matter their reading interest or level, I will always have something for them.
