Last year student-athletes would approach me for water bottles before practice. (Remember water fountains are turned off due to COVID and while having a refillable water bottle seems simple enough, some of our students struggled with this.) Upon further investigation, I discovered most of the students who approached me came from families going through hard times or who struggled financially. I started keeping water bottles in my room for any student who needed one but struggle with the waste generated by plastic water bottles (estimated at 82.8g -about 3 ounces- per (1) 16.9 oz bottle) and the cost to refurbish the water bottles as well. Our school does have several water bottle refill stations and I would love to provide our students with a reusable water bottle so that we may focus on promoting the health benefits of drinking water and trying to lower our carbon footprint at the same time.
