A little goes a long way in my class room. Given the opportunity, you may be amazed at the creations some of my students can make out of a paper-clip or post-it note. It's not just my student's creativity that is inspiring, but their execution of their expression. My students are the living, breathing embodiment of bringing thoughts to life (and making them beautiful). I want to give my restorative justice class (AKA Teen Court) the tools to bring life to their thoughts and creativity. Each of my students has expressed that they feel not just confident but competent in their ability to impact our high school, as well as our community with the proceedings of our class/"courtroom." Teen Court is designed to lower the suspension rates at our school by providing a peer-reviewed "court" session in which my students question the student sent about what happened, who could have possibly been impacted by their actions, and how we can move forward. Our school is a project-based learning school that partners with local agencies in order to provide real-world learning opportunities to our students. I want to leverage some of our partnerships in order to receive the wood needed to build a jury witness stand. I want to use the tools in the toolkit provided to help the students build the sections of the room. I know this project will help build class community along with school culture. I want to use the gavels along with the lecterns for the classroom appointed "judges" of the court. Each position in teen court bares weight. The judge's appointed play a pivotal role in enforcing the verdicts and facilitating the court proceedings. It is imperative that the judges are garnished with the proper materials to help the students actualize the roles.
