I have a degree in Special Education and I am certified in Math. My alternative math class blends the best of both worlds. After unsuccessfully getting my students to memorize basic math skills such as multiplication tables, positive/negative computations, and order of operation. I use special education “direct instruction” with math technology to help with these issues. The scientific calculator helps them concentrate on the math concepts that they are learning. Some programs have scientific calculators online. These are not as effective at having a tactile unit in their hand. With distance learning and Google classroom they can take their Chromebooks home. Being able to let them each take a scientific calculator home would substantially increase their knowledge.
