Research has shown phonemic awareness skills to be the greatest predictor for early reading skills. With this information in mind, I know that I have to focus on phonemic and phonological awareness skills in my classroom. I am starting a new classroom that did not exist before, so I do not have a lot of manipulatives and classroom materials. I want to provide fun learning activities that will allow me to teach and my students to practice rhyme, syllables, onset-rime, and phoneme manipulation such as deleting, substituting, adding and blending. I want to foster an excitement for learning and for literacy through my instruction and these exciting manipulatives.
