I would love to give my students the freedom to complete tasks where they are comfortable around the room. My students love to move to different workspaces to access books, anchor charts, and other class resources. These portable lap desks will give my kids the opportunity to work independently or with a group to collaborate on assignments anywhere in the classroom. Students can also take these desks to a hallway work zone or even to another classroom. Currently, my students are either using large books or clipboards to create a hard writing surface. I would love to be able to give them these desks for a larger surface to work. It will also allow my students to sit up to work instead of being hunched over a clipboard. I would also like to provide my students with a mobile rolling cart of resources. The drawers in the cart can easily be removed to take the materials to their work space. I plan on filling these drawers with math manipulatives, STEM activities, and art supplies. Materials can easily be switched out based on what is needed for the week. As the school year progresses, my students become more independent in their work habits. They can come grab a drawer of resources, as well as a lap desk, and work comfortably around the room. Since my students are in second grade, their half-day pre-k year was their last 'normal' school experience. These kids have become accustomed to social distancing and self-paced learning. Portable desks will allow the distancing if they feel inclined. The hands on projects and assignments are tasks that they might have missed out on due to virtual learning, and I would love to put supplies back in their hands to take ownership over their education.
