The KidWind Kits and materials I am requesting will give my students an opportunity to go all-in exploring alternative energy and applying the design process. Every student wants to "do more" in class; notes, vocab, and lectures are no longer the foundation of student learning. In order to better prepare today's students for tomorrow's workforce, it is imperative for students to take a leading role in their learning experience, designing and testing their own solutions, making results-based revisions, and communicating their findings. The wind generator kits will not only guide students through engineering principles, but will also take students through a first-hand experience of alternative energy options. Students will design and test various shapes, sizes, and configurations of turbine blades and gear ratios to produce the highest electrical output possible. As a culminating project combining lessons learned of wind energy, solar power, and the basic principles of the power grid, my students will be able to construct a full "power grid" for a model town. If students want to take their turbine designs to the next level, there are regional, state, national, and even virtual competitions.
