Current school-issued technology is great for most general high school classroom tasks. However, the students in my computer classes have found the devices to be severely lacking when it comes to completing advanced technology coursework from home. I teach industry-standard software in all 6 of my computer classes—all assignments are completed on computers installed in my lab and during classroom instruction. The software cannot be installed on the current school-issued devices that students take home, as those devices do not meet the minimum hardware requirements for running the software. Additionally, students have software licenses available to them for personal devices, but the vast majority of my students do not have compatible devices at home. As such, students who are absent get behind and struggle to keep up or even make up the work—a major problem since the onset of COVID-19. The stress of being behind in class is compounded due to family transportation issues—many of my students cannot come to school early or stay after school to make up work, as they ride a bus and have no means of alternate transportation. As a solution to this problem, I am requesting funding for a laptop with hardware capabilities to smoothly run the industry-standard software taught in my courses that students can check out and take home to make-up assignments. This laptop will be available to all 90 of my students upon request. The laptop will allow students who have been absent due to COVID or any other reason to have a device available to them to take home, work on and complete software-specific assignments, and then return the device to me for reissue to another student. This device will provide an opportunity for students to catch up on missed work, increase learning opportunities, increase assignment completion, and reduce homework stress.
