My students love learning about the -ologies in science. If this project is funded we will have supplies for a whole unit on geology. Students can shake and flip sediment tubes then watch how the different sized rocks stratify. They will learn vocabulary at the landforms center. Children will get to inspect, sort and identify rocks, minerals and fossils. They can take turns designing buildings to test on the earthquake tables. The whole class can even play rock bingo in a game that uses polished stones as markers.
This project will inspire an early love of science by putting a lot of interesting rocks in a lot of little hands.
Most of the materials requested can be used by our host 3rd grade class, then checked out to other classes. The centers in the unit were chosen to last for years to come, but there is one special event that will be used up by this years 3rd grade classes. The dig a gemstone kits are single use kits. This years students will have a special activity where they excavate small polished gemstones from a block of clay, identify them as a class, then take them home. This will be a nice little bonus for these students who have missed out on a lot of field trips, and learning activities due to recent COVID precautions.
Storage tubs are have been requested to safely store these materials and make them more portable to check out to other classes.
