I not only teach English I, but also a Reading for Pleasure class. Many of my students come into my classes hating to read, primarily because they have not encountered a book that thoroughly interests them. My goal is to provide a wide variety of young adult books that deal with questions surrounding identity, death, abuse, poverty, racism, cultural differences, and all of the issues that my students enounter on a daily basis. Pairing them with that one book that makes them think, "Wow! that is me and I am not weird after all!" or "Now I understand why my friend behaves the way they do!" can lead them to read more and learn more not only about themselves, but about the world around them. I have purchased the majority of the books in my classroom with my own finances. I believe it is important for me to offer new young adult literature in my own classroom for several reasons. The first reason, is that school library funding is so limited that librarians are unable to order the newest literature. The second reason, is that I can model book talks with my students which not only piques their interest in books, but initiates discussion about certain topics that may not otherwise be addressed in the classroom. It also provides an opportunity for me to plan in independent reading time several days per week. If I recieve this grant, it will help lessen the personal burden of purchasing new Young Adult books and bookshelves for my own classroom and will help me expand our classroom library.
