I would love to be able to use these modern novels (The Hunger Games and American Born Chinese) to open the eyes of my students. Reading can be amazing when the right novel is found. Not only will my students learn from these novels, but they will also be able to see a world outside of their own. Reading is about more than learning - it's about experiencing life through words. Through The Hunger Games, students will find a world completely different than their own, with characters who are faced with challenges similar to those of some of my students. American Born Chinese sheds light on the tough issue of race and how being different is OK. Who won't benefit from reading such a novel? Putting these two novels together, my classroom will come alive to a world of learning that my students will love. I can't wait to share my love of reading with them, while giving them an eye-opening experience to a world outside of my classroom walls.
