We spend a lot of time reading, researching, and writing in our high school English room, and students have become used to varied study settings and surroundings throughout the Covid pandemic. These stand-up desks will allow students to share the option to stand up and stretch while still getting work done and to feel more at home in our room. They will also allow students with special needs and energy that has no place to go more options throughout their school day. The accompanying anti-fatigue mats will make standing more comfortable on our tiled floors. In addition to letting students stand while working, these desks will serve double duty as podiums, giving my students the opportunity to easily access their Chromebooks and face their peers while they learn to present. Right now, we have a huge, cumbersome old wooden podium to use for our classroom presentations, and it almost blocks a number of us from view. With the awkward setup, my high school seniors typically turn their backs on their Chromebooks and their peers to look at the projector screen while they present. They need the up-to-date skill of having their laptop and other materials in front of them and facing their audience as they present. These stand-up desks are a comfortable height, and two offer room for papers and other materials to be placed on them in addition to their laptops. I look forward to sending my students off onto college and tech campuses, military bases, and other places of employment prepared to communicate and present with up-to-date skills, and to offering several students in each class period the opportunity to stand, instead of sit, and conquer, as we ease back into learning in our physical classroom setting.
