My students have not had a regular year of school since they were in 8th grade. The pandemic has impacted their literacy skills, their maturity, and their engagement. Despite these challenges, my students are curious and searching for answers to those difficult questions we all face as teenagers. By providing a new format for reading a classic via the graphic novel, students of all reading abilities will be able to engage with the text in meaningful ways. The Frankenstein graphic novels will have all students excited to answer tough questions such as "When does science go too far?" and "Are monsters born or created?" The graphic novel allows students to appreciate and honor Shelley's work alongside masterful illustrations. This will help to cultivate a love of reading among students and meet them in their literacy needs.
