Being good at anything requires practice. Professional athletes practice their sport of choice everyday to be great. Reading is the same way. In order for my students to get better at reading they require practice but not just with any books in the beginning stages of learning to read. Words are built with patterns. After students are taught these patterns they need to read books that use words with those patterns. That is why decodable books are so important to beginning readers. Students build their confidence and have success when the books are written with the patterns they are familiar with.
