It is apparent that our students are going to struggle for the next few years in education. Now is the time to maybe reevaluate the way we teach our students. We need to really develop a plan that will allow us to focus more on individualized learning. By teaching the individual child we are meeting the student at their level and closing those academic gaps. Learning this way is more comfortable for the student and less frustrating when trying to comprehend a new skill. We have always had gaps in education, but since the pandemic the gaps are bigger. The only way to move children forward and help them to reach their fullest potential we need to look at their individual needs. In addition to meeting the individual student at their levels, we are seeing more and more classroom behavior problems when we are asking students to sit quietly all day. This expectation is even more problematic to the students in my room, who have not had the opportunity to learn this way. Most of their educational environment was at home on the couch. They have learned to learn in comfort. I plan to change our learning environment to meet the needs of the students who are and will be coming in to my classroom. By having a flexible environment, I think we can take the expectation away of learning quietly in our seats and learn a new way to be engaged.
