A large percentage of my students struggle with reading and reading comprehension. The items I have requested will support students' understanding of the American Revolution and the spies that made such an impact. We will read "The Scarlet Stockings Spy" as a class and learn what messages she was sending and how she was getting her information. The Legos will be used for a STEM project where the students will create Lego buildings to hang a clothesline. They will then use the paper and watercolors to paint clothes to hang on the line. The students will create a message by the pattern they show on their clothesline. This activity will demonstrate their understanding of how the spy in "The Scarlet Stockings Spy" was sending secret messages. Legos are so versatile that I am excited to be able to create other lessons that allow them to build diagrams and various projects to add interactive and engaging lessons to our reading passages. The watercolors and paper will also be used for students to create art projects about historical figures, political cartoons, and major events. I believe these innovative lessons will not only help the students in their comprehension, but will also bring joy to learning, pride in our country, and improve mental health through being creative.
