My project is to increase the variety and number of books in my classroom library. With Covid-19, so much of our learning has become digital. Students are spending hours on the computer, both in the classroom and at home doing homework. It’s gotten to the point that my students are surprised and sometimes even thrilled when I hand them a paper assignment or a physical book for us to read in class. By providing my students with physical books, I can help them give their eyes a rest from the glaring light of a computer or phone screen. However, in order to get them to buy into the idea of putting the tech away, I have to provide them with engaging books that can compare to what they can find online. My hope is to add at least 30 new books to my classroom library, ranging from epic stories to graphic novels. The variety of books will not only provide new and interesting content for them, but will also increase their knowledge of the world around them, and increase vocabulary. It will help my students to meet several Oklahoma State Standards, such as independent reading, critical thinking, and understanding the author's purpose. These are skills we work to teach in the classroom, but the best way to reinforce these skills with students is if they are engaged in what they are reading. Finally, by adding these books to my classroom library, I hope to encourage a love of reading and exploring new horizons in my students. For some of my students, their formal education may end when they graduate from high school. But, by encouraging reading a variety of books, I encourage my students to never stop learning.
