If this project is funding, I will have the tools to grow greatly in my knowledge and ability to reach a group of students that I have not been successful with communicating with. My hearing impaired students often receive basic communication when an interpreter is available. This is difficult because interpreters are not free (from interpreting in classrooms) to interpret for counselors. This limits communication with my students who need extra support. If this project is funded, I will have the tools I need to learn American Sign Language, which would help to foster communication between my students and I. I would use the books to learn the language; Posters to remind me of phrases: Masks so students can read my lips better; and Index cards to reinforce what I have learned. My students who need college planning help will then be able to communicate their needs to me, without an interpreter.
