I teach 7th and 8th grade special education math. My students have varied disabilities but all have a desire to learn and improve. The pandemic has thrust students into unfamiliar learning environments and made it especially difficult for students like mine that need more individualized instruction and hands-on learning opportunities. It has also created motivation issues as students don’t consistently have the traditional educational setting available with needed structure and teacher guidance. My request is two parts, one for manipulatives to use in class and the other for rewards for our store. I strive to make classroom math fun, accessible, hands-on, and relatable. In one class we focus on basic math skills like using money, measurements, and budgeting. I want the students to be able successfully navigate the life situations that require math. I would like to purchase some math manipulatives. Many of these students struggle outside of the traditional classroom environment and the pandemic has significantly altered their learning. Students will be provided with better hands-on learning tools and motivation with the funding of this project. In our classroom we have a class store in which students purchase items with “Bronco Bucks”, our class money. Students earn money by passing all their classes and from class jobs or if they are “caught showing character”. I offer snacks and small prize items in the store for students to purchase. Students must keep up with their account balance, deposits, and purchases. The pandemic has created many issues for students including low motivation and behavior struggles. Our class store is a learning tool that also motivates students and helps to address behavior in a positive way. Funding for the snacks and prizes will allow students to continue to learn financial literacy, have positive motivations, and see real life math.
