Their disabilities vary from Specific Learning Disabilities, Other Health impairments, Language/Speech difficulties, as well as on the autism spectrum. However, their disabilities do not define them nor do the students let themselves be defined by their special needs. Oftentimes their academic difficulties are not visible as they come to school every day ready to give their best. How they handle their difficulties can often be internal but also externally visible. Our students struggle with reading and math concepts. Some students are working way below grade level. As a team, we do our best to make learning as fun as possible but also encourage them daily to reach for their goals. Our district is a one-to-one district, so all of our students have a chromebook checked out to them. Students use their chromebooks almost daily to help with individualized online instruction or re-teaching tools especially after a student has returned to school due to illness or quarantine. We need new headphones that help block out background sounds and fit comfortably on their heads and ears as well as mice to help them navigate the computer as the touchpad can be tricky for some of our students. This is especially true for students that are on the spectrum and have multiple sensory issues. In our classes, we use a reward system to help students stay focused on their goals. The bulk toys and snacks will be used amongst the team to encourage students to stay the course throughout the week. The candy will also be used amongst the team for an instant tangible reward for working hard, staying focused and on task as well as making progress towards their classroom goals.
