When students in English II World Literature open a book, they should be able to metaphorically leave the classroom and enter another world; be it a previous historical era, a hero's inspirational story, or a universe of fantasy. But if the broken and battered novels they have to choose from are, quite literally, falling apart at the seams, how are we to expect students not to do the same? Being a rural school in the heart of Oklahoma, we don't always have the same type of funding resources as larger urban area schools. Teachers must ignite their creativity and remain intentional to give our students the best quality education. For me as a new teacher, seeing my students read the exact same copies of books I read at my school 10 years ago seems unacceptable. But there is nothing to blame for this, except the COVID-19 pandemic. Our school has been forced to prioritize a Fuse Virtual Learning Program to retain online students in our district and a Wen-Gage/Google Classroom program in the event our students must do virtual classwork. Therefore, new class sets of books have not been ordered. As grateful as I am for the ability to incorporate digital technology into my classroom...there is no substitute for reading an actual book, page by page. My students are in dire need of new novels. The novels listed in the project will enable my students to explore wonderful, fantastic places through literature.
