We act out Julius Caesar in my class, and the biggest learning obstacle for my students is the language barrier. We just do not speak like Shakespeare anymore, so the No Fear Shakespeare version has the original text on one side of the page and a modern-day translation on the other side. This truly unlocks the magic of Shakespeare for my students, and they learn to love his work. We also read The Kite Runner and The Book Thief in literature circles, which gives students time to collaborate, discuss, and enjoy their chosen books together. This builds a love of reading, critical thinking, and a class culture of collaboration and discussion. My students love these books, but we are in desperate need of more so that everyone can participate!
