This mythology unit gives students a fun way to apply their knowledge. To engage higher level learning, I use a student-lead, self-discovery method through project based activities. Allowing my students to manipulate the materials, provides them an opportunity for a deeper retention of the academic standards. Students will have a class set of books, a folktale for small groups/read-alouds. Graphic novels aid in engaging students that have a harder time maintaining the stamina to read a full novel. Students will use art materials to create a supplemental, artistic expression that is vertically aligned with our Pearson literary unit, traditional literature. Students are to pick a mythological character, whether it is from literature or an original idea, and create a visual representation. Students may choose to dress as their characters during their presentation. Reading: Traditional literature (folktales, tall tales, legends, mythology) Social Studies: Cultures surrounding Egyptian, Greek, and Native American Mythology
