There are several reasons why I would like a digital microscope that will connect to my computer and interactive screen. While we use the microscopes a couple times in 7th grade, our 6th graders take a deep look at cells. We spend a few weeks looking at plant, animal, and bacteria cells as well as the unicellular organisms, paramecium and Euglena. 6th grade is the first experience our students have with microscopes and while they love the opportunity, it's a bit of a struggle at first helping them learn how to use the microscope to clearly view their specimen. Although I spend time teaching them how to use the microscope, the overview doesn't make sense if they can't "see" what I'm talking about. I still end up running around the room helping them individually. If the students could see what I'm viewing in the microscope (on the board) while I'm explaining the process, it would make a lot more sense to them. I have caught Covid19 both last January and this January during our microscope unit because during this unit I am in such close contact with so many students in order to help them. I believe this would also help reduce my close contact exposure. Furthermore, this microscope with be extremely helpful for students who are quarantined at home. Since they won't have access to microscopes at home, this microscope would allow me to show them what we are viewing in the classroom via Zoom or a video recording. I don't want them to feel like they are missing out on a learning opportunity, just because they are quarantined.
