My name is Christie Brown and I am requesting materials for use in my first grade classroom at Liberty Elementary School in Ponca City. Each year that my students have been enrolled in public school (PK, K, 1), their school year and academic progress has been affected by the pandemic. Teachers have followed strict protocols in order to maintain high standards of health and safety and prevent the spread of Covid. This has led to the inability to send home book bags, learning activities, and even library books with students so they can practice reading at home with their families.
I am requesting a class set of book totes that I plan to utilize to send home sight word readers and sight word activities so students can have extra practice with their families. Sight word acquisition is the gateway to becoming a fluent reader and it is so much more than just practicing a deck of flashcards. The materials requested will provide a rich, home-school connection by providing sight word readers and sight word activities that our blossoming readers can share with their families. As a result, I anticipate students reaching mastery of their required sight word lists even quicker and generating a spark of enthusiasm in both parents and students. Through regular sight word testing, I will have data to support this improvement in sight word acquisition. In addition, I know students will be delighted to have these fantastic books and activities to share with their families and show off their skills!
