My struggling readers who were not able to access appropriate support during distance learning due to COVID-19 have continued to struggle after the return to in person learning. This project will support independent reading of text and will assist struggling readers to better understand and learn. My students need reading assistance in their general education classrooms so that they can also access information from text. The general education teacher with 25+ students cannot always be available to assist them with their reading. The reader pens requested in this project are designed to promote active independent reading, understanding, and learning. When the struggling reader is able to access print independently, the classroom teacher's attention can be given to all students in the room as opposed to the individual receiving reading assistance. Therefore, the reader pens are benefitting all students in the classroom.
