The project I would love to have funded is made possible with the purchase of a Handwriting Without Tears Kindergarten Kit. There is a specific learning need in kindergarten of reinforcing proper handwriting habits. Yes, this gives students confidence in their writing, but more importantly, will give them the fundamentals to become successful readers. In our device-driven world, less attention is being given to handwriting, and early childhood reading specialists know that proper handwriting techniques (top to bottom, left to right, etc.) is crucial for emergent readers. While this kit serves five students, the teacher guide will allow me to create handwriting lessons for the entire class. I have noticed a specific need with many of my students due to the pandemic and having been out of the classroom with hands-on practice. Furthermore, many students who might have attended the pre-k program last year did NOT attend due to the pandemic. The program offers multisensory activities, which will benefit every student. Fine motor skills that are developing with the kindergarten aged child will be enhanced! As a result, student handwriting will improve, confidence will be built, students will write more, thus giving them a good reading foundation. And we all know that a successful reader is a successful learner!
