In a high functioning Autism classroom, one of my goals is to help the students learn to self regulate and this includes learning to take a break when needed. This year, I have found out one of the hardest things for my students to ask for is a break. Providing them with a calming space where they can learn to self regulate, take deep breaths, regain focus and come back to work would be amazing. The yuck balls can help those who are extremely frustrated to take that frustration out on the balls by stretching them and breathing. The pillows and carpet squares provide boundaries, calming colors, and soft warm places to sit. Also missing would be the colorful posters I would make to help guide them with pictorial guides for breathing, counting, Velcro helpers, and more. With a color printer I would be able to provide the cards and posters for my students. With what I have added onto my list, I believe I can accomplish this and more. My classroom is the first classroom where they are introduced to state testing and that can be overwhelming. Knowing they have a place to take a break may bring some peace in the classroom.
