My students learn to ask for items that will help them succeed in the classroom by using different seating arrangements, fidgets, hands-on materials, and visuals that have been absent the past two years of education. Many students struggle with peer interactions and self-regulating because of the new stresses outside of the classroom.
I have noticed that my students are able to stay on task when they are provided with hands-on activities or different seating arrangements during difficult tasks. These students feel heard when they need to move around or have something to keep their hands busy. The items on my list will allow for more options and more students will be able to pick on option that fits their need. It will also allow for students who need a quieter setting with headphones to cancel out the noise of others. The use of different visual aids will help students stay on task and monitor their actions during tasks.
Other items on my list will allow for more engaging learning opportunities. Some of my students prefer applied application of skills compared to traditional worksheets to show mastery. The different learning games will increase mastery due to the applied application requiring students to use higher level thinking. These items will also allow for more social interactions and increase social skills with their peers. It is important for my students to be able to laugh and enjoy different activities while learning because they are children who deal with harsh realities outside of the classroom on a daily basis. Being able to push the thoughts of whats going on outside of school during engaging activities or having an avenue to take a break when they are not able to function will be life changing for them as students.
