Math is extremely exciting and should not be taught by worksheets alone. Giving students a choice of different hands-on activities is essential for them to increase their retention in all areas of math. I need to provide many ways for my students to experience this type of learning. The engaging activities in this project will provide all my students many ways to master mathematical facts, understand number sense, and begin to understand and experiment with decimals and fractions. The math toolboxes will reinforce math concepts. The toolbox is packed with manipulatives that align to major standards, the toolbox provides lots of hands-on experience with everything from basic operations and working with decimals to multiplying fractions and measuring angles. I will use the manipulatives to review key concepts with a small or large group of students…or encourage kids to practice building math skills on their own. The fraction and decimal kit will give a hands-on way to develop skills in parts of a whole, comparing fractions, equivalent fractions, addition and subtraction of fractions, reading decimals, writing decimals and comparing decimals. The multiplying hands on fraction kits create an opportunity for students to visualize multiplying fractions by fraction as they lay transparencies over fraction cards. The decimal grids will be used to provide visual support for adding, subtracting and comparing decimals.
