My project focuses primarily on 7th and 8th-grade students. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, these students were in the 5th and 6th grade. They essentially missed an entire nine weeks of math instruction. Unfortunately, the pandemic didn’t end and again the following year, these students missed instruction as well. My goal is for these students to feel confident in mathematics again. These students are still struggling with basic calculations and this can be avoided with calculators. In addition to calculators, these students need Geometric shapes, compasses, and rulers to better understand and apply grade-level Geometry concepts. Another useful tool for my classroom includes computer speakers. I have a desktop computer in my classroom but no speakers. This would enable me to show educational videos for more variety in instruction. I want these students to learn higher-level math problems and understand how math applies to the real world around them in fun, hands-on, creative ways without spending all of their time on numerical calculations.
