Research has shown that students learn best by doing. A teacher standing in front of the classroom telling students what and how to think is a technique that has been proven to not work as well as students being able to collaborate with each other in problem solving and manipulation of materials. Students need to be given a problem and figure out how to solve it, all the while learning new skills and techniques that can be applied in other situations and problems. The current pandemic has limited the ability to be able to do this causing learning to suffer as a result. Some activities could be done by oneself, but, this learning often lacks because the students were not able to collaborate with each other. I would like card stock to set up the activities and problems for my students to manipulate and move around in lessons that are called Formative Assessment Lessons. These lessons allow students to use cards to move information around in different carefully planned problems instead of using paper and pencil with constant erasing. If an answer doesn’t work, the student simply moves it, instead of erasing and attempting to remember everything that he/she has tried. Once a piece is used, it cannot be used again. Example of some of these lessons that I have used can be found at Formative Assessment Lessons (mathshell.org).
