The novel Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds will engage students with its relatable and complex themes.The book is written in verse and this method of writing invites students to tackle literary content that may be daunting if written in another manner. The novel boosts students' interest to have discussions about universal problems. Students read The Outsiders in the fall semester , this book’s theme has similar connotations that would add to students’ understanding of empathy and compassion. Paper Towns by John Green is a novel that examines how we change and grow. It begs the reader to think about human connection, friendship, authenticity , and growing up.It themes are perfectly suited to engage and stretch my advanced learners. These books would be added to enrich the spring poetry unit.The sharpies and pens are needed for Blackout poetry and writing free verse used for the writing portion of this unit. Sensory and fidgets are tools that provide students with ADHD, anxiety, and other neurodevelopmental disorders a means to move without disrupting class. It gives them a chance to focus and participate in classroom activities.
