To help students learn amid the pandemic, my students are in need of novel sets and new classroom library books. Many of my novel sets are outdated, and I don’t have enough copies for the entire class. On virtual learning days or when students are quarantined, even if we’re in the middle of a novel, I have to create an alternate assignment, creating more work for me as the teacher and disrupting my students’ learning. In addition, during the pandemic, many of my students used books to “journey” outside their world. I want to continue this by updating my classroom library with new young adult literature choices. One of the main goals in my classroom is to create lifelong readers. I have had great success the past few years with students’ independent reading choices; however, students also need the experience of a whole class novel. To make my novel units more engaging, my students and I need new novel sets. They would love new young adult literature texts as whole class reads and independent reading choices in the classroom library. I will measure my success and my students’ successes in multiple ways. First of all, I will be able to tell by students' engagement while reading a whole class novel. I also won’t have to worry about not having enough books when students are out on virtual day or being quarantined. My students also take the STAR test that measures their reading levels 3-4 times a year. I can measure success with a rise in levels as well. Last of all, seeing books checked out of my classroom library and being read will be a final measure of the project's success.
