The dowels, plastic cover, drinking straws, glue, nail clippers, dessert bowls, and other supplies that I have requested will allow my students the opportunities to work together in small groups. The materials will be used in 2 different hands on classroom projects. The first will be the planning, design and construction of toothpick bridges. This project will help my students build on their knowledge of triangles and how they are used in the real world. Their bridges will be tested for their strength. The second project will be a capstone project for our unit over polygons. In this project, my students will plan, design, construct and fly kites. I believe these kind of hands on projects are crucial in the long-term retention of concepts learned in the classroom. Hands on learning is a large part of filling the learning gaps created by the pandemic. Watching my students build communication and problem-solving skills with their peers, allows me the opportunity to assess specific learning challenges as well.
