Our students are more anxious than ever. Because of COVID-19, they have spent a lot of time at home and behind their screens. They are finding it difficult to connect with their peers and their teachers at school. The "typical" classroom setting of rows of desks and harsh lighting does not provide the welcoming environment that students need to feel relaxed. My students are equally diverse in body types and comfort levels. What works for one doesn't always work for the other. It's time to think outside of the desk. I believe the best thing I can do to help all my students feel more relaxed in my classroom is to provide seating and lighting options that give them the comfort of home, with the structure of the classroom, in order to ease their pandemic-induced anxieties. Bean bag chairs, lamps, rugs, and pillows will give my students an environment where they can sit casually, enabling them to discuss and confer about topics in a different way. By creating a mentally stimulating, comfortable environment for my students, I will provide a classroom where they will be more relaxed and open to expanding not only their social skills but their academic skills as well.
