I would love to incorporate flexible seating in my classroom. Flexible seating offers a wide variety of “non-traditional” seating arrangements that helps facilitate the nervous system in helping aid the students' need for movement and sensory sensations. Studies have shown that through COVID-19 students face more challenges with anxiety and stress, alternative seating will help give these students an ulterior focus. This will give me the opportunity as a teacher to focus more on instructional time and less on uncontrollable distractions. The stability balls and chairs, bean bag, and floor pillow will replace the sole option of traditional seating, while that will still be an option for those who prefer it. The lap desk will replace desk tops so students will be able to work directly from their flexible seating option.
It will help with retaining attention, enabling peer collaboration, reducing extended seating periods, and giving the students an opportunity to guide their learning in a new way. When students feel like they have a say in their learning experiences they immediately want to be more involved.
